We all know that I am obsessed with chocolate and coffee. If you need proof, just check out this recipe for Mocha Fudge Cupcakes.

It should be no surprise that when I was baking brownies one night, I decided to add instant coffee.

They were delicious and were eaten so fast that my mom (the biggest chocolate lover of all of us) didn’t get to try one. Don’t worry, she got a large chunk of the final frosted brownies, which were even better!

These from scratch Mocha Brownies with Coffee Cream Cheese Frosting are the ultimate, chewy chocolate brownie that will become everyone’s favorite dessert recipe! They feature an easy, homemade classic brownie with instant coffee topped off with a simple and quick coffee cream cheese frosting. These unique brownies are a fun take on the classic and are perfect for parties or just a night with your friends. Click to discover new ways to use instant coffee in baking!

I wanted to take these brownies to the next level and make them even more indulgent, like these Peanut Butter Blondies with Decadent Fudge FrostingΒ and S’mores Brownies. Thus, I put frosting on top of them!

Not any frosting though. Of course coffee frosting!

I decided to make a cream cheese frosting as I love the tang and flavor that cream cheese frosting has, especially when paired with brownies.

To perfect your frosted brownies, here are a few quick tips!

  • When making the brownies, add the instant coffee before letting the chocolate mixture cool. This will allow the coffee granules to dissolve properly.
  • You do not have to let the chocolate mixture cool long, you just do not want it to be hot. No one wants scrambled eggs in their brownies!
  • Make sure to fully cool the brownies before frosting them. Otherwise we will end up with cream cheese soup!
  • I recommend refrigerating the frosted brownies to allow the frosting to firm before cutting. Since you want all ingredients at room temperature to make the frosting, it will be soft.

I have been baking up a storm with a lot of fall recipes recently, such as this Caramel Apple Upside Down Cake which is arguably the best dessert I have made in a while!

I will have more fall recipes for you in the coming weeks, but today it is all about the pure indulgence of chocolate and coffee!

These brownies will certainly be enjoyed by all and could just substitute for your cup of coffee in the morning πŸ™‚

Mocha Fudge Brownies with Coffee Cream Cheese Frosting

These Mocha Brownies with Coffee Cream Cheese Frosting are the ultimate, chewy chocolate brownie that will become a family favorite! They feature an easy mocha brownie topped off with a simple coffee cream cheese frosting. They are just pure chocolate and coffee decadence all in one bite!

Course: Dessert
Ingredients
Mocha Brownies
  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate
  • 1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Coffee Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 8 ounces cream cheese , room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter , room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
Mocha Brownies
  1. Preheat the oven to 350Β° F and line an 8 inch square pan with foil or parchment paper.

  2. In a medium saucepan melt the butter and chocolate. Add the instant coffee and set aside to cool slightly. When cooled add the sugar, eggs, and vanilla into the chocolate mixture. Mix until the batter is smooth.

  3. In a small bowl whisk the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the dry ingredients into the batter and mix until the flour has been incorporated.

  4. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the brownies comes out clean. Remove from the oven and cool.

Coffee Cream Cheese Frosting
  1. In a small bowl dissolve the instant coffee in the water. As long as the water is not warm the temperature of the water does not matter.

  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add the coffee and vanilla, beating until mixed.

  3. Slowly, add the powdered sugar. Beat on medium to medium-high speed until light and fluffy, ~2-3 minutes.

  4. Frost the brownies and serve! It is best if the cream cheese frosting is allowed to set in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. These brownies can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.

Recipe Notes
  • Here is my favorite way to line a baking pan with aluminum foil.
  • This brownie recipe was adapted from The Ghirardelli Chocolate Cookbook: Recipes and History from America's Premier Chocolate Maker.Β

  11. These look so yum! Will definitely be using this recipe. You had me with the cream cheese frosting. Always my favorite to eat, but I do a better job making buttercream.

    1. Thank you, I would love to hear how you like the recipe! Cream cheese frosting is just as easy. The key is the the butter and cream cheese should both be at room temperature. You could also always substitute buttercream for the cream cheese icing if that is preferable.
